Natural Time
Sylvain Biquette
Watchface
Description
Natural Time is a new way to measure time inspired by nature. It throws away 24 hours, 60 minutes, 60 seconds - The hand completes one rotation per day. - 0° at the bottom is true midnight. - 180° at the top is solar noon. - No 24-hour double-loop. No time zones. No daylight saving. Just the real, continuous movement of the sun, shown exactly as seen from where you stand. It's like the sun dial for modern times. The Pebble Round was made for this. A circle. 360 degrees. It just fits. WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT The colored ring is day and night as they actually happen at your location, sunrise and sunset will shift with the seasons The moon shows its real position and real phase, right now The moustaches in the center mark the solstice extremes at your current latitude, they represent the longest day and longest night your sky will give you this year The watch face works on Pebble Round (where it belongs) but all the other pebble too (sometimes circles can fit into squares) ASTRONOMY ON YOUR WRIST — NO PHONE NEEDED Real sun position, real moon phase, real sunrise and sunset, all computed on-device from actual ephemeris data. On a tiny e-paper MCU. No server. No phone dependency. Connect the companion app once to set a specific location or choose GPS, then leave your phone in a drawer for a month. The watch still knows where the sun is. AN HONEST WORD ON "TELLING THE TIME" This face is intentionally the most absolute version of Natural Time: a continuous movement, no graduations. It gives you a sensation of where you are in the day, not a precise number for your 3:15 meeting. If you need, I included the display of traditional (I call it "artificial" time) for a few seconds triggered by a wrist movement. I have a thousand ideas for Natural Time faces, from practical dials with degree counters, to stranger ones that only a few people will love. This one is the pure version, the one that looks like what the sky actually offers a continuous movement without graduations. "Where is the sun?" is the new way to ask "what time is it?" Look at the sky, look at your wrist, same answer. ABOUT THE INVENTOR I'm Sylvain, aka Biquette (French nickname for goats). I build things that probably shouldn't need to be invented but somehow do. I've never worn a watch in my life. I don't have a schedule to keep, and when I do, my phone is right there. Pebble is the first watch I've ever considered wearing. Preordered in December to finally test Natural Time on the only screen shaped like the sky. This face is exactly the one i want on it.
