Description

The whole screen is the hourglass.

On the hour the glass is empty. Grain by grain it fills, and by :59 the sand is up to the brim, so the level itself is the minute hand. You can see how far through the hour you are without reading anything.

The sand knows which way is down. Held upright, it settles into the bottom of the screen and stands at the angle a real heap stands at. Turn your wrist and it pours to whichever edge is now the low one. Lay the watch flat and gravity lets go: the grains break loose and drift out over the whole display. Lift it again and they gather back down.

The time sits large in the middle, always the negative of whatever is behind it. Where the sand hasn't reached, the digits are white. Where it has buried them, they're black. As the sand moves, they follow it, so the time stays readable whether the screen is empty, full, pouring or shaken into a snowstorm.

It only animates while you're looking. The backlight coming on or a shake of the wrist brings the sand to life for a few seconds, and it keeps running while you keep moving.

The rest of the time the face wakes once a minute, sets the sand to the level the clock implies and draws a single frame. The accelerometer stays off.
